Khon Kaen is the economic, cultural and educational 'capital' of the North-East of Thailand, which has a population of approximately 20 million people. A large modern university with many faculties is located in the city and this serves the greater area, which is also a gateway for rapidly-expanding links with other countries in Asia and beyond.
KKVS was originally set up to meet a need for a school teaching in English in the Khon Kaen region, so that local students could have the same opportunities as
in other areas in Thailand. A Board was formed of local university and business people who recognised this need. Focus was given to students being exposed to native English speakers throughout their schooling. The students would be immersed in English, while following the framework of the Thai curriculum. They would be exposed to a more interactive style of education with the emphasis on developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity. Khon Kaen Vithes Suksa Bilingual School began as a school in 1997 and is the only school of its kind in the north-east and is of significance in the region.
